Bronx Science Fair Guidelines

  1. All grades will be judged. 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners will receive medals and ribbons. Fourth – tenth place winners only receive ribbons. All students receive certificates of participation.

  1. Grades K-8: Individual or group experiments (groups limited to 3 students).  We strongly encourage group projects as a cooperative learning experience.

  1. Children must come in school uniforms, and have adult supervision (preferably school coordinator) for the duration of the fair. However, adults must wait in the cafeteria until after judging.

  1. JUDGING IS BASED ON THE EXPERIMENTAL METHOD. IF STUDENTS SUBMIT A RESEARCH REPORT OR MODEL (e.g., report on what a rain forest is, or a model of circulatory system), they may decrease their chances of winning.

  1. Please bring paper towels for spills, and garbage bags. Nothing should be left behind. Anything left behind will be thrown away.

  1. No vertebrate animals, living or dead, may be used as part of an experiment.

  1. No sharp instruments (e.g., staple guns, hypodermic needles) may be used.

  1. No projects that emit smoke or noxious fumes are permitted.

  1. No matches, candles, or corrosive materials are permitted.

  1. No electrical outlets are available. Students must provide their own electric current.

  1. No display of ribbons won at prior events may be attached to projects.

  1. NO VOLCANOES PERMITTED. (This is an all-time favorite---we expect children to use the steps of the scientific method.) WE ENCOURAGE PROJECTS THAT DEAL WITH THE URBAN SETTING.

  1. Project dimensions must fit specifications on enclosed diagram----THE COMMITTEE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REJECT ANY PROJECT.
